As a lesbian couple, it was very hard to find a TRUE “Open and Affirming, “ church family. When we stepped inside the doors of UCC Toms River, we truly felt at home. They reached out to shake our hand and they touched our hearts. We feel like family here. These people, especially Pastor Ruth, are very Affirming! As a Deacon and Board member we have become very involved.

I cannot describe what this church, and its congregation have done for my family.  They have become family; and have provided unconditional support to myself and my husband. Pastor Ruth saved me and brought my husband to God. We are eternally grateful.

When we moved to Ocean County in 1992, we were looking for a new church. My husband had grown up in the United Church of Christ and I soon became attached to the denomination myself. When we entered the church, we were extravagantly welcomed and, during coffee hour after church, the welcome continued. The minister came to call on us that same afternoon and we soon joined the membership. In 1994 we moved to Monmouth County and continued to drive down to Manchester for church every Sunday because the church members had become like family for us. We are grateful to have so many wonderful sisters and brothers in Christ. Our daughter was married by a United Church of Christ minister (my husband’s sister) and our granddaughters were baptized there as well . We value the diversity of the congregation and the commitment to being an “Open and Affirming” United Church of Christ.

I belonged to my childhood church for my entire life – until I moved to central Jersey.  The commute was too much – so I began a search for a new church home.  I visited many denominations but could not find the right fit.  I was looking to be part of an Open and Affirming Congregation – and they are few and far between.  But then I walked into the United Church of Christ of Toms River!  What a wonderful group of Christians – ready to give everyone who entered a loving welcome.  My mind was made up quickly and I’ve been enjoying my new faith community ever since.  And the music is wonderful too!

Sustaining Out Faith and Finding Friendship

My Taiwanese wife, Judy, a former Buddhist — found Sunday mornings fulfilling, pleasurable and friendly.  Getting caught up in the friendship and spiritual fulfillment, Judy also became a UCC member.

We returned “home” to New Jersey and the UCC Toms River church.  It was wonderful renewing friendships and making new acquaintances.   In this time of rapid social change, its rewarding to know some things will always be here to sustain our faith.  On the plus side, our church friends make the UCC Toms River a most welcoming home all the time.

The congregants were so warm and cordial that I decided–despite the travel inconvenience to me–I might actually return to worship there again.
